By Lauren Poniatoski

The members of the Bryant University Chapter of SHRM are extremely proud to congratulate our fellow SHRM Chapter Members (and recent Bryant graduates) Sherisa Youcher and Andrew Brousell. Both Sherisa and Andrew recently sat for the SHRM Professional Human Resource Certification exam and have successfully passed this phase of this prestigious professional certification process!

Well done, Sherisa and Andrew!!

Although both Sherisa and Andrew have both successfully satisfied the SHRM PHR exam requirements, they are still required by SHRM standards to be professionally employed in the field of HR for two years before they can fully claim their PHR Certification award status. Since Sherisa and Andrew are now both employed by the EMC Corporation in the area of HR, this final SHRM requirement should not be a problem.

All of us associated with the Bryant University Chapter of SHRM are extremely proud of the hard work and continued dedication performed by both Sherisa and Andrew and we wish each of them continued success in their HR professional careers.

Acting on a request by my Management Department Chairperson, Dr. Lori Coakley, I have been working this year with The Target Corporation. The company responded favorably to my request and established a Target - Bryant Student Chapter of SHRM PHR Scholarship Award. Target will make an annual gift to Bryant so that two SHRM students may receive a scholarship of $250 each to help pay for the Professional Human Resource (PHR) Certification exam. This year's recipients were SHRM Chapter seniors, Andrew Brousell and Rebekah Provost.

A bright outlook for Grads (04-30-07)

That bodes well for graduates of schools like Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I., where 90 percent of the students major in business.

Bob Soules, manager of corporate recruiting at the college, said the greatest opportunities seem to be in accounting, finance, computer and information technology and human resources.

"We are doing particularly well," Soules said of the hiring season at Bryant.

His hope is that 90 percent or more of this year's grads will end up being employed in their field or enrolled in graduate school.

Bryant senior Andrew Brousell of Medfield is among them. He landed a job in February in the human resources division of EMC Corp., an information management firm with headquarters in Hopkinton.

When he began his search, Brousell made use of Bryant's career services and alumni network, plus researched online and learned that EMC has a leadership development program in human resources. He applied, and was offered a job just hours after being interviewed.

A management major who began his studies as an accounting major, Brousell enhanced his chances for employment through summer internships in various aspects of business, including banking and accounting.
Thank You for Contribution (04-18-07)
SHRM Members,
We would just like to formally thank all of you for your generous contributions to Lenore's Pantry on Tuesday. With your help, the help of other Bryant student organizations, and the Falls School in North Attleboro, we were able to collect over 200 individual personal care items for the pantry, not including monetary donations.

Again, many thanks to all of those who made contributions!

Sincerely,
The A-Team
2007 HR Games Competition (Northeast Region)
Bryant University's HR Games team traveled down to Rutgers University to compete in the 2007 HR Games competition for the Northeast Region.

Bryant finished a highly respectable 13th place in the standings out of the 21 Colleges and Universities that represented at this year's competition. We competed against such formidable adversaries such as Robert Morris University, a veteran HR Games participant and this years 1st place winners and Shippensberg University, also a veteran team who came in a "nail biting" second place!

Other schools in attendance included Seaton Hill University, Houghton College, Marist College, Penn State University, Manhattanville, SUNY (Buffalo and New Palz), Temple University, University of Scranton, Bloomsberg University, William Patterson University and Alfred University.

Congratulations go out to our Bryant HR Team of "ALL STARS", Rebekah Provost, Sherisa Yocher, Andrew Broussel, plus Jason Forte and Cathryn Meyer!

A special thanks also goes out to Dr. Harsh Luthar and Dr. John Poirier for their expert preparation assistance and especially to Dean Trifts and Dr. Lori Coakley as none of this could happen without your continued support!
- Professor Greenan.

The Article...

David Greenan knows Bryant University.

He is an alumnus, class of 1973. After working the next 25 years in various management positions in retail, banking, and manufacturing, Greenan returned to Bryant to seek alumni career counseling. What he ended up with was a job.

Greenan worked briefly as the interim director of Bryant's Executive Development Center (previously the Center for Management Development). Then he was hired as the director of development operations and communications for the Bryant Capital Campaign, the first in the school's history. While working on this new initiative, Greenan decided to pursue an MBA - where else, but at Bryant.

In five years, he finished his degree - and when the capital campaign was successfully complete, Bryant offered Greenan another opportunity: teaching. For the past year, he has worked as a full-time instructor of Business 101 in the Management department. This course is mandatory for students enrolled in the College of Business and provides what Greenan refers to as "an immersion in everything there is to know about business."

Students in Business 101, primarily freshman, are required to develop a full business plan in one semester. In teams of 5-6 people, they create a plan which includes product or service development, marketing, financing, accounting, and implementation strategies. "It's extremely intensive," Greenan says, "but they work hard to get it done."

One of the secrets to the success of the program is partnerships. "The goal is to introduce students to various areas of the University and get some synergy going between departments," Greenan explains. For example, students enrolled in Greenan's sections: "This introduces students to the University's resources very early in their career," Greenan says. "It's not a mystery to them and they aren't as intimidated." Future Bryant partnerships being discussed include a pilot mentoring program between Business 101 and students in 200-level accounting courses.

Greenan, who recently added a graduate course to his teaching resume, says he's thrilled with Bryant and the education he's received. "In the various positions I've held, I always felt that my training from Bryant served me very well," he shares. "I look forward to passing that tradition on to a new generation of business people."

Bryant SHRM Chapter President Receives 2006 "Future Stars in HR" Scholarship Award by David G. Greenan, Secretary/Treasurer, RI State Council of SHRM, and Bryant University SHRM Chapter Faculty Advisor

Congratulations to Bryant University SHRM Chapter President Brian Angell, recipient of a $2,500 scholarship from SHRM that will assist him in obtaining the education necessary to pursue his ultimate goal of a successful career in the HR profession. Brian is a remarkable young man who has been extremely helpful in re-establishing the SHRM Student Chapter at Bryant this year.

As a result of Brian's leadership efforts and the hard work done by the members of his team, the Bryant Student Chapter was recently recognized by SHRM and awarded a $250 prize for having the third highest percentage increase in membership (71%) nationwide. Only the University of Mississippi (30,000 students) and the University of Massachusetts Amherst (17,000 students) exceeded Bryant's (3,600 students) impressive results.
Society for Human Resource Management Gift from RISC-SHRM
The Rhode Island State Chapter of SHRM (RISC-SHRM) was very pleased to hear earlier this year that the Bryant Student Chapter was recognized by SHRM National for achieving the 3rd highest percentage increase in new membership. Throughout the year, the RISC-SHRM has been kept informed about all the other great things the Chapter has achieved including Brian Angell's SHRM Scholarship award, the various HR Panel Discussions held, student attendance at HR events, etc.).

As a result of all your efforts, I have just been notified that the RISC-SHRM Board yesterday approved that they will MATCH THE SHRM NATIONAL AWARD and will issue a check to the Bryant Student Chapter FOR AN ADDITIONAL $250.00 to assist the Chapter in continuing the work being performed!

The presentation of the check will be made by Mrs. Linda Lulli, SPHR Asst. Vice President Bryant HR and RISC Govt. Relations Director Brian Angell, President at our final Chapter meeting/celebration that will be held on Wednesday, May 3rd at 5 pm in MRC 3. Please make an extra effort to attend this final event of the year if possible to celebrate our success and personally thank the many people who have supported the efforts of the Chapter this past year. Please pass this message along to any other members who may not appear on my e-mail list. Remember, potential members or anyone with an interest in HR are also invited to attend the Chapter celebration on Wednesday, so please pass the word!

A special "Thank You" goes out to Jennifer Chasse, of Bryant's Executive Development Center and RISC- SHRM College Relations Director for proposing this award to the Board for consideration.
